Ostrich business brings up to 2 million rubles. per year with each ostrich family

Agriculture Livestock

Ostrich farming is considered a profitable business; these exotic birds are called a money printing machine. For two years now, an entrepreneur can fully recoup expenses and earn up to 2 million rubles. per year with each ostrich family.

Ostriches do not require special living conditions, all they need is space. Moreover, these birds live on average 60–70 years and produce offspring for 25–30 years. For two ostrich families, it is necessary to purchase a land plot of 10 acres or more, where shelters for adult birds will be placed, a small building where they can winter and where incubators and feeders will be placed. According to the Nizhny Novgorod real estate agencies, an average area of 300 to 400 thousand rubles is worth a piece of land of the required size with utilities and an ordinary village house in these areas.

The fastest, but at the same time the most capital-intensive start will ensure the acquisition of families of mature birds (they are called "breeding trios"). It is much cheaper to buy an incubation egg, chicks, a one-year-old bird. But in this case, lower acquisition costs will entail a longer return on investment. It should also be borne in mind that incubation will immediately require incubators, which will then be idle for three years until the bird reaches maturity.

The most common breed of ostriches among Russian entrepreneurs is African. They perfectly tolerate Russian frosts. But to invest in the construction of a simple barn, where at least they could hide from the weather, you still need to. This is the minimum infrastructure with which to start an ostrich farm.

According to experts, a separate building is also necessary because it is convenient to store food for ostriches there, and an incubator can also be placed there. The construction of a small farm on the site will cost around 80 thousand rubles. with the material and the work of the builders.

In order to save on costs, in the first two years, while the number of ostriches is not more than 200, you can not get a license to sell meat. Ostriches can be sold alive for meat in metropolitan ostrich farms that already have contracts with restaurants and shops. The wholesale cost of 1 kg of meat will decrease from 600 to 500 rubles. per kg, but at the same time you will save on the organization and licensing of your own downhole workshop, which can cost the farm 200 thousand rubles.

Ostriches feed on everything from all types of crops (wheat, barley, corn, millet, beans, peas) and ending with grass (clover, silage of cereal crops, white cabbage, forage, spinach, carrot leaves, etc.). Adult birds require up to 2 kg of feed per day: it can be purchased from agricultural enterprises. The cost of 1 kg of feed does not exceed 50 rubles.

One of the problems of the newly formed ostrich farm is staff. All ostrich farmers face an inevitable problem - people drink and do not go to work. In general, to service the farm, where three adult ostrich families live, one hundred young birds are enough for three or four people. Usually, locals willingly agree to earn extra money even for a salary of up to 8, 000 rubles. True, for the first two months, employees need to be constantly monitored: so that they appear at work, so that they do not steal.

Entering the breeding ostrich breeding segment will take four to five years. The first, second, third offspring must be raised to four to five years of age in order to sell novice ostrich breeders for breeding. An adult family costs from 220 thousand rubles. The best option is the mixed version, when the farm simultaneously breeds pedigree ostriches, sells meat and young chicks.

However, ostriches grown for slaughter, pay off faster than tribal or bought for the reproduction of young chicks with their subsequent sale. For example, a year after the purchase of four adult families, each one can get 100 kg of live meat for sale. The calculation of profitability from the sale of ostriches for meat is constructed as follows: an ostrich in a year lays 60 eggs, of which an average of 40 ostriches can be obtained. Each of them in a year will reach “slaughter age” and will give 100 kg of live meat, ready for sale. In one year, one family produces four tons of meat, which at a retail price of 600 rubles. per kg will bring the owner 2.4 million rubles. income. The main consumers of meat are Moscow restaurants and premium supermarket chains. But it makes sense to engage in meat deliveries to restaurants and shops when the livestock on the farm reaches 1000 heads.

Income from entrepreneurs also comes from selling souvenirs made from ostrich eggs, agritourism and advising novice ostrich growers who regularly visit farms.

The direction of “ostrich consulting” in Russia is gaining momentum: if three years ago, farmers concentrated on “commercial” breeding of ostriches (only for the sale of meat, eggs, skin), now that this business has grown in Russia, large farms have reassigned to breeding and already act as consulting centers, offering services for the acquisition of birds for the organization of the economy, selling feed and training in bird care.

The tourist destination is also actively developing. Farms offer not only to look at ostriches, but also to look after them. Moreover, tourists willingly not only “feed” the birds, but also buy ostrich eggs (each of them costs 700 rubles). At the weekend, the number of tourists who want to visit an ostrich farm reaches 60 people. The average ticket price is 150 rubles. True ostrich tourism is possible provided that the farm is located in one of the areas of the region with high tourist traffic.
