Your business: grow leeches

Agriculture Livestock

In recent times, Russia (and not only it) has been swept by a nostalgic wave - the forgotten fashion for treatment with leeches has already returned in order. It is interesting that leeches are allowed by official medicine, and the doctors who are involved in this area are called hirudotherapists. In general, medicine did not stop practicing leeches, only the demand for them was small and the branch of leech breeding was almost stalled. Today, one of the few companies that are successfully engaged in breeding leeches, "Gerud I. N.", is ready to sell its technology for 200 thousand dollars. But why breed them in some artificial conditions?

And here it is already interesting. The fact is that all the leeches of the world are divided into two groups: wild leeches (which live in ecologically clean reservoirs) and medical leeches, which are bred in the laboratory.

Manufacturers of “medical” leeches together with representatives of official medicine are categorical: it is absolutely forbidden to use a “wild” leech for medical purposes, because of the danger of infection! But allow me, gentlemen, you contradict yourself! If, according to ecologists (and the same doctors), a leech is an indicator of the cleanliness of the reservoir and the surrounding natural area, if the leech dies first when the ecological balance fluctuates, if you say that leeches cannot be caught in Moscow, there is only one dirt in the reservoirs, then what kind of is there a danger of infection?

In addition, I am not aware of cases of citizens' appeals. "Bitten by wild leeches" for help in medical facilities. I have never even heard official seasonal warnings, such as: “Citizens! Be careful when swimming in the ponds. Wild leeches can bite you! ”On the contrary, I have observed all my life that village bathers and urban summer residents, those who were not squeamish about these amazing invertebrates, perceived the creatures that clung to their feet as a free treatment. And they all felt great.

In my opinion, “prohibiting” the use of wild leeches for treatment, due to their “uncleanliness, ” is like disdaining breastfeeding in favor of a German (created by science) mixture of sterilized bottles. Or disdain dirt, forcing to buy "dirt" in a pharmacy, packaged in bags and "approved" by the Ministry of Health.

And, finally, the last consideration - to replenish the gene pool of laboratory leeches, businessmen go to an ordinary body of water (not themselves, probably) and recruit their wild “comrades” on Zabrod boots, to which they are willingly attached. If these comrades were so dirty, dangerous and “badly brought up”, then one such outlaw would have looted the entire colony of “medical” individuals living in the quiet solitude of a sterile space ...

Dissatisfaction with the independent Duremar, during the “High Season” selling wild leeches under the guise of medical leeches, probably makes sense, but for completely different reasons. The fact is that the emerged demand for leeches led to their barbaric capture, as legal businessmen and breeders complain. That is, people can soon catch bloodsuckers all to one, and then what remains for us? I personally cannot give an unambiguous answer: whether leeches are threatened with complete extermination at the hands of Duremar or is it just a struggle for markets under the guise of caring for the environment. I am not an ecologist and do not have statistics. But what I caught discussing about the “health benefits of wild leeches”, I have already outlined above.

The selling price of a leech is from 30 to 50 rubles. In Europe, the price of a leech reaches 12 euros. And very soon, a leech in Russia will cost one and a half euros, according to the forecasts of its manufacturers.

How to organize a leech farm? What nuances will you have to face?

Firstly, this production cannot be mechanized! You have to get a leech with your own (or hired) hands. And feeding the leech, and replacing the water, plus plus sitting down for mating and sorting it all resembles fussing with fish in the aquarium of an amateur aquarist.

What specific conditions do leeches need?

Firstly, bovine blood. Secondly, clean water and the correct climate in the room (lighting, temperature, humidity). For one million leeches it is necessary, by the way, one thousand square meters of area.

Leeches live in clean water, so you need a cleansing system. In gerudo circles, we are talking about a figure of 2.5 million in domestic currency.

To create a microclimate, add a ventilation system to the masthead, which, according to geodezavodchikov, will cost a million in the same domestic currency.

The so-called laboratory glassware and furniture will cost you about three hundred thousand rubles.

Separately, about bovine blood. Here she definitely should not be infected! Finding one is your first task.

The case is started immediately for 500 leeches. Start-up will cost 15-20 million rubles. He will begin to recoup himself not earlier than in 5 years.

In addition to bovine blood, you need to find a person with a rare profession - a leech grower. He is responsible for the entire cycle of leech cultivation - from fry to mature individuals and monitors the entire population like a shepherd. The most difficult thing in this whole thing is to establish contacts with the authorities, which must issue special licenses. Because a leech is a medicinal material.

In fact, the black leech market exists and is not going to give up. In addition, words are words, and doctors, without hiding this, use the services of leech dealers. And they are not afraid at the same time to ditch their patients. And patients, oh horror, are happy and even recover.

Why is it still there? Yes, because with huge and growing demand in our country, the market is not saturated with the very laboratories that grow medical leeches. The Ministry is in the way, it’s difficult to break the license for breeding leeches. But pharmacy chains have now forgotten how to keep live leeches in their banks, giving them to customers through the window. They don’t want to bother. The demand for leeches is such that it is a sin not to do this business now. Not only that, hirudotherapy is the best remedy for varicose veins, thrombophlebitis, hypertension, angina pectoris, keloid scars, early menopause, infertility and prostatitis. It turns out that leeches now also treat children's allergies. And do you imagine what demand for leeches arises today, when Russia finally passed the demographic hole? With leeches, it’s now fashionable to treat absolutely everything. It’s time to seriously engage in this business, especially to those who have some idea of how they will do it.
