How to start a sportswear business

* The calculations use the average data for the World

Fashion for the East and an active lifestyle have led to the popularization of sports such as karate, jiu-jitsu, taekwondo, wushu, etc. Sewing clothes and accessories for martial arts is often more profitable business than the production of casual clothes.

This is due to increasing demand, low production costs and high profitability. True, many professionals still prefer "authentic" Japanese-made clothing. However, its cost often exceeds Russian analogues by 2-3 times.

Before drawing up a business plan, do a little research to identify the demand for such clothing in your area to determine the volume of future sales. If you have a sufficient number of sports schools and lack of competition, you can count on the success of your business.

As a rule, when organizing their own sewing production from scratch, experts advise not to spend money on opening their own workshop, but to give first orders to large sewing factories that are not busy due to the crisis.

However, in this case, it is more advisable to start production even with small batches, but sew them yourself. Sportswear for practicing martial arts is sewn in a simple pattern made of natural or with a small admixture of synthetics of one-color fabric of different densities (from 210 to 450 g / m2).

The size grid depends on growth: it starts from 110 cm and ends with 190 cm. Models of smaller or larger sizes are usually sewn to order.

One set of clothes consists of three items - a dressing gown (which in Russia is mistakenly called a kimono), trousers and a belt.

Models of sports uniforms for different types of wrestling vary in cut, details and tailoring technologies. But there are general requirements to such clothes: it should be free, not restricting movement, comfortable, durable, with reinforced seams.

All seams on children's clothing should be covered with a cloth on the inside to prevent skin rubbing.

Organization of a sewing workshop for tailoring a sports uniform

To organize a small sewing workshop, you will need a room for work (about 30 sq. M), equipment (professional sewing machines), materials (fabric, threads, braid, twine) and tools.

It is better to buy fabric and accessories in large quantities and directly from the manufacturer.

Unlike the usual studio for tailoring casual clothes, the manufacture of a sports uniform for martial arts does not require expensive cutting equipment and the use of mannequins. Labels and tags can also be ordered in bulk, rather than printed independently.

The cost of a ready-made set of such sportswear is from 300 rubles, depending on the size and model. Retail price starts from 1000 r.

Such a high margin is associated with the number of intermediaries between the manufacturer and the end user. In addition to the wholesale purchaser and retail stores, one of the links in this chain are various martial arts schools and sports sections. It is on them that it is worth focusing primarily when planning sales.

As a rule, students usually buy clothes and necessary equipment from their trainer, and not at a sports store.

In addition, many large chains of sporting goods refuse to buy cheap products of domestic producers, focusing primarily on more expensive clothes of famous brands.

But small shops and markets willingly take on sale inexpensive, but high-quality clothing, the price of which, even with a significant margin, remains affordable for buyers.

Another advantage of working with such stores is that they prefer to work by reservation. Which, in turn, allows you to plan your production volumes. Before sewing the first batch of clothes, keep in mind that for one sales channel (for example, a store), 20-30 models of the most running sizes are enough.

The range of products you produce can be varied over time with accessories, equipment and other related products (bags, shirts, textile shoes, etc.).

As a paid service, you can offer embroidery of the emblem or the name of the sports club on clothes. Additional equipment will cost from 30 tons.

Total, the opening of its own small workshop for the production of specialized sportswear will need from 200 tons. (this includes rental of production space and two-seamstress personnel).

Experts say that the first year will be spent on establishing sales channels, and the second - on expanding production. So, “net” profit should be expected no earlier than three years from the start of work.
